Came across an interesting pattern that calls for EP fibers which I don't have or ever used. And after checking out a few sites this stuff is a bit pricy for my budget. Is there a good substitute material that can be used in it's place ?

thanks,
Mike

Hi Mike,

I guess you are tying for panfish? I prefer the natural materials ( bucktail, Icelandic sheep ), I just think they swim better. If you are looking for man-made materials, almost any similar product will do ( Super Hair, Polybear, etc... )

My first choice would be to see what DMAC has....then if you want the synthetic EP replacement check/google the fly tyers dungeon

I've been tying for a bit now with EP fibers. Can't comment on the alternatives at FTG, but they certainly look worthwhile to try. EP fibers do have some interesting properties though. 1) on bait fish patterns you really want to tie them sparsely, so a pack goes a long way unless your building really big flies. 2) they take coloring with pens really well, so you can just tie some in white and then color them as needed to the bait your trying to imitate. As long as you have the markers, white can become whatever you need within reason.

I'd expect any of these synthetic fibers to work that way though and you can build some big fracking flies that are still pretty easy to throw. I've built 4" brim imitations that can be thrown with a 6wt.
My observations lead me to conclude that dogs are far happier than men. In accordance, I'm trying to wag more and bark less.

I've never worked with EP fiber but I have several packs of Congo hair from FTD. If any has used both please comment if they are similar and/or interchangeable. The Congo Hair is about 1/4 the price of EP. Both come in about 50 different colors.

thanks for all the great suggestions appreciate it.

I hadn't thought of using Congo hair but looking at it now it would certainly work. I use allot of FTD products myself so I think that should do the trick.

I do use allot of natural materials when I can, using bucktail would also do the trick here too. The pattern I was referring to called for EP fibers for shellback & wingcase material

Thanks,

Mike

I have used EP Fibers, and Congo Hair. I think the Congo Hair is very comparable, if not preferable to the EP Fibers. The price alone is worth at least trying. I will now be using Congo Hair when I run out of EP Fibers. Fly Tyers Dungeon has some great materials, and it won't break your pocketbook, unless you buy in mass quantities...hehehe.
Now just to get my flies to do what my mind imagines...
