TOPIC: The Golden Retriever

The Golden Retriever 2 years, 5 months ago #14150

I'm posting this fly out of admiration for the way it catches fish. Having never met the creator (Jim Finn), I was handed one while fishing with Bob Cramer of Mossy Creek Outfitters this past spring. I was actually skeptical about such a gaudy pattern on a spring creek. But as I kept catching fish and losing flies.....and he kept handing me the Golden Retriever over and over again, I was sold. I've now tied and fished it through a season, in white, black, rootbeer, and original gold. The gold wins hands down for me. I've seen the biggest fish in a pool move 10 feet to attack this fly. It's impressive. Hope it adds to your boxes.

Recipe

Hook: Standard 3x long Streamer hook
Thread: 3/0 Red
Bead: Gold Tungsten
Weight: Lead wire
Tail: Tan Marabou
Abdomen: Red Tying Thread
Hackle: Amber Estaz

Simple to tie! You can see a video of Colby Trow Mossy Creek outfitters tying here.

See you on the water!

I really like this fly, and want to try it out. I don't have the right materials wouldn't you know. But in the future I hope to tie this one.
Now just to get my flies to do what my mind imagines...

NJT, is this the Mossy Creek in Virginia? I was born and raised in Staunton, didn't know the creek when I was a kid but have fished it on a visit or two since.

That is a cool fly and I have some estaz laying around here somewhere:-).

That looks simple enough, and the way it sounds it works good too. I'll have to tie some up and try them. Thanks NJT.

Eaglerapids, Yes'sir it's the same Mossy Creek. Great water in the area. I enjoyed the trip very much and hope to get back down there soon.

Flytyer56, it's an extremely easy fly to tie. Something about the gold estaz and red thread combination really seems to trigger strikes.

Hi Kelly, if you are missing some materials, I bet you could create one using substitute materials. That is one of the great things about fly tying...Get Creative, you just might tie something better than the original

My goodness it's a small world:-).

Re: The Golden Retriever 2 years, 5 months ago #14246

Hi NJTroutbum,

Thanks for sharing the fly. We like the looks of it so much we e-mailed Colby telling him we really liked it. Like someone mentioned, the red showing through the Estaz may very well be what's attractive about this pattern with fish. We'll soon have several in our flyboxes to test nexst time we are on the water. Take care & ...

Eaglerapids.....it sure is. Makes things kinda nice sometimes.

Al & Gretchen......very nice! I'm sure they will appreciate the shout of appreciation. I think it's certainly a great product and addition of Shenandoah Valley fly fishing.

Poksal, it's nice when a simple one comes long that just plain old catches fish.

Hey NJT, have you tried any of the kreinik flash they are using in that kreelex pattern? Pretty interesting stuff from their website ......

There'a awhole line of products I've never heard of. Interesting the way a craft supply site has a page spefically for fly tying.

That is terrible news:-(. Notice how they are pricing it like the fly shops also? This may be signaling the end of getting a decent price for stuff at the craft store.

Re: The Golden Retriever 2 years, 5 months ago #14415

I have not tied with the Kreelex material. I did fish with a few of their patterns, but didn't fair well with them. My buddy caught several nice fish with it though.

One of their buyers must be a fly tyer. Yes, it is bad news that the prices are comparable to the shops. The good news is if more stores start carrying fly tying materials, things will be more accessible for all. They may also start carrying different types of material

I dont think the prices are really that bad. The micro chenille, flash and dubbing I imagine are spefically packaged in the quantities they are just for fly tying. The spooled materials are packaged the same as they would be in a craft store. What I can't figure out is the foam disc's. I just cant picture the flies they are describing the disc's being used for.
